Mae Penick Blackwell died October 26, 2009 at Walton Regional Medical Center. The funeral service will be Thursday, October 29 at 3 pm in the chapel of A. E. Carter Funeral Home in Madison. Interment will follow in the Madison City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Madison.

Mae Blackwell, wife of the late Flonnie Thurmond and J.B. Blackwell, was born in Madison, one of five children, to the late Lazarus and Ollie Belle Penick. She lived in Morgan County, Madison, and Godfrey all of her life and was an elementary school teacher for 39 years.

She had two daughters; Martha Partee of Social Circle and the late Jimmie Webb of Milledgeville; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren.
