Father, Charles Philip Helfenstein (B A 1841, honorary M.A. 1880), a civil engineer; mayor of Shamokin; son of John Philip and Elizabeth (Leonard) Helfenstein, of Carlisle, Pa.

Mother, Caroline Hill (Perkins) Helfenstein; daughter of Jeremiah Colcord and Esther Ann (Colcord) Perkins, of New Market, N. H.

Yale relatives: Charles P. Helfenstein, '25 (nephew); and Wallace D. Simmons, '90, Edward H. Simmons, '92 S., George W, Simmons, '00, Roy C. Helfenstein, '13 D, Richard W. Simmons, '27, and Edward C. Simmons, 2d, ex-iy (cousins).

Shamokin High School and private tutor in Philadelphia. Second colloquy appointment Junior year; first colloquy appointment Senior year; member Linonia and Kappa Sigma Epsilon With Shamokin Gas Light Company 1880-81; studied in Yale School of Law 1881-83 (LL.B. 1883); secretary for Shamokin Gas Light Company 1883-86; had since practiced law in Shamokin, being in partnership with George B. Reimensnyder under firm name of Helfenstein & Reimensnyder 1886-89; director of Consolidated Telephone Companies of Pennsylvania and Xema (Ohio) Water Company; secretary of Shamokin Board of Trade ten years; vestryman of Trinity Episcopal Church, Shamokin, 1889-1904.

Married (1) February 22, 1883, in Hazleton, Pa., Caroline Atwood, daughter of John and Sophia (Warr) Northall. Children:. Esther Colcord, Wheaton Seminary (now College) ^-'04, who married Dr. Roger K. Williams; and Gretchen Elizabeth (died in infancy), Mrs. Helfenstein died January 11, 1902

Married (2) August 12, 1908, in New York City, Helen Crawford Holl, who studied at Hood College 1904-06, daughter of Thomas Andrell and Louisa Jane (Reed) Holl, of Shamokin. Children: Helen Leonard, a student at Antioch College; John Philip, Jr ; Carolyn Adeha and Louisa Holl (twins), and George Alvin (died in infancy).

Death due to a cerebral hemorrhage and pneumonia. Buried in Shamokin Cemetery

Survived by four daughters, one son, two grandchildren, a brother, William L. Helfenstein, '96, and a sister, Mrs. Caroline H. Forsyth (art student at Vassar three years), of Shamokin.
