He was the son of William Gunnell and Sarah Coleman Gunnell.
On October 13, 1825 as James S. Gunnell, he married Hellen M. Mackall in the District of Columbia.
They were the parents of six children.

Departed this life, on the morning of the 28th instant, in this city, after a long and painful illness, Dr. James S. Gunnell, in the 65th year of his age, formerly of Virginia, but for the last twenty-nine years an esteemed citizen of this place. His funeral will take place this (Saturday) afternoon, at 5 o'clock.

Death of Dr. Gunnell
With deep regret I announce the decease, this morning, of a highly valued citizen, Dr. James S. Gunnell. He was one of the brave defenders of Baltimore in 1814.
Age 64 years.
