Herman "Cowpeas" Calmes, 87, Broadway, Irvine, husband of Wilma Combs Calmes, passed away Sunday at Marcum-Wallace Memorial Hospital of a sudden illness. He was born Aug. 25, 1922, in Lee County, a son of the late William Bruce and Fannie Martin Calmes. He was a charter member of the River Drive Christian Church. He was a WWII and Korean Navy Veteran, having served in the South Pacific, Guandalcanal and Iwo Jima. He won five Bronze Stars and one Silver Star. He was a Mason and member of Irvine Lodge #137 F & AM.

Survivors in addition to his wife, Wilma, include his daughter, JoEllen (John) Dawson of Lexington, two grandchilren, Jason Puckett of Orange County Calif., and Stephanie Duty of Nancy; two great-grandchildren Isabella Puckett and Isaiah Duty; two brothers Harold and Howard Calmes of Irvine, a sister Juanita Calmes Thomas of Shelbyville.
