"Jonathan served June 11, 1813 to June 14, 1813 in Capt Hezekiah Barns' Co, 1st Reg 2nd Brig, 3rd Div in War of 1812.
Jonathan moved from Vermont to Ashtabula Co, OH in 1814 where he married [Sarah Rockwell].
In 1826 Jonathan and Sarah and family [5 children] moved to Canton, Fulton Co, IL prior to any settlement in northern Illinois; then in 1831 to Rockwells Mills near Monmouth, IL where he erected a flour mill, sawmill and grist mill, the first in that section of the state. They were living there at the time of the Black Hawk War.
In 1832 with uncle L.P. Rockwell, he furnished lumber for protective barricades against the indians in the Black Hawk War. The Governor sent a squad, and Mr. Buffum became a corporal of the Company.
They moved to Rock Island, IL, 1836, and in June got a license, leased a hotel there and ran the hotel and bar for awhile. He then built the first brick building in that city, a hotel, "American Hotel". He also bought a farm near Andalusia, IL where he spent his last days. His son John resided on the farm in 1885."
[Buffum Family Vol II pg 226]
