According to several descedants, James was the son of James Monroe and Ellen Mae (Callentine) Hartman. James Monroe married Ellen in Ohio on 9/15/1861 then moved to Indiana that fall. James Monroe was born in Allen Co., OH on 5 Jul 1837. James Monroe's and Ellen's burial location is apparently unknown at this time.

Funeral services for James Howard HARTMAN, 77, who passed away Wednesday afternoon in Woodlawn hospital, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. (DST) in the Church of God, Akron.
The Rev. D. L. SLAYBAUGH will officiate and burial will be in the IOOF cemetery, also in Akron.
Hartman, who lived in Fulton county his entire life, was a member of the Akron Methodist church. Born here May 8, 1872, he was the son of James and Ellen CALLENTINE HARTMAN. He was married to Ella SHRIVER on Sept. 9, 1893.
Survivors include four sons, Roy [HARTMAN], Macy, Willis [HARTMAN], Plymouth, Robert [HARTMAN], Peru, William [HARTMAN], South Bend; three daughters, Mrs. Earl CARPENTER, Niles, Mich., Mrs. Lottie PERDUE, Plmouth, Mrs. Russell HARTMAN, Culver; a sister, Mrs. Cora CARPENTER, Niles, Mich.; a brother, L. D. HARTMAN, Rochester; thirteen grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren.
His wife and two children preceded him in death.
The body will be moved from the Foster funeral home, Rochester, to the home of the son, Roy, in Macy, this afternoon."
Note also that another obituary during this same year for a sibling, Clara Hartman Churchill, lists the mother's maiden name as Calentine (with one "L").
