John was born in Unterseen, Switzerland, a little village beside Interlaken. He was christened Dec. 20, 1840. Though other records (including his tombstone) have other birthdates, this date is from his original birth record in Unterseen.

John was the son of Jacob von Allmen and Margarita von Allmen (that was her maiden name, but I don't know the relationship). There were quite a few von Allmens in this area of Switzerland.

More on the von Allmens in Switzerland.

In 1850, when he was 9 years old, his family emigrated from Switzerland, coming in through the port in New Orleans, and settling in Richland Co, IL near his uncle Christian, who had emigrated in 1844, and several other VonAllmen families, which probably also included his uncle Johannes.

John joined the Union army in 1861 and served in the 63rd IL Inf. His records say he was 5'7", dark complexion, brown/hazel eyes, black hair. During the War he was in Ark, Miss, Ala, Tn and in Nov-Dec, 1864 his company was with Gen. Sherman in his famous "March to the Sea" to Savannah, Georgia through Maryland, Virginia, North & South Carolina. At the end of the War his group passed in review in Washington, D.C. He was discharged in 1865 in Louisville, Ky.

John had become acquainted before the War with Mary Elizabeth Heral. They married Nov. 1, 1866 in Richland Co,IL, where their first 5 children were born.

In 1878 they moved to Oblong, Crawford Co, IL, where the next 5 children were born.
In 1896 John traded his 80 acres in Crawford Co, IL for 200 acres in Oregon Co, Mo. Leaving their oldest son Edward behind, they moved to Oregon Co, Mo. Soon after arriving 19-year-old Alfred contracted Typhoid and died.

In 1909 they moved to "town"-- West Plains, Howell Co, Mo. He died in 1913 and was buried in Jolliff Cemetery, across the road from their old farm.
