Vera M. Miles, 68, Paulding, died 1:35 a.m. March 6, 2000 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.

She was born Jan. 3, 1932 in Fostoria to Joseph and Luella (Talmadge) Jackson. Her mother survives in Fostoria. She married Paul E. Miles Oct. 20, 1951 and he died Nov. 24, 1989.

She is survived by two sons, Paul J. Miles, Winnsboro, LA, and Ronald C. Miles, Fort Wayne, IN; three daughters, Linda Cobb and Leah King, both of Fort Wayne IN, and Lisa Brady, Bloomington, IL; two brothers, Grant Jackson, Pittsburgh, PA; and Cecil Jackson, Mesa AZ; three sisters, Joan Pinskey and Linda Anderson boh of Fostoria and Charlotte Gilbert, Suisun City, CA; and 12 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Steven, Danny Joe and Leon Dale; and three brothers, Carlos, Chucky and BernardJackson.

Mrs. Miles was mayor of Paulding. She was elected to Paulding City Council in the early 1980's. She was elected mayor in 1987. She was the fist black femail elected in the city's history and also in the State of Ohio. She was elected to her fourth term in November. She was a member of the EMA Board, Solid Waste Board and it's Policy Board for Paulding County, District #5 Intra-structure Board and Integrating Committee; she was a member of it's administrative board. She helped organize the Fort to Port Improvement Organization and the Tri-County Board of Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Services. She was a member of the Melrose United Methodist Church, Melrose, where she was a substitute teacher and coordinator of Christian Social Development.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Paulding, the Rev. Ruth Ann Scoby officiating. Burial will be in Paulding Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Wednesday and 8-11 a.m. Thursday at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding. There will also be visitation one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Village of Paulding Police Reserves or the National Kedney Foundation.
