1870 US Federal Census for Royalton, Niagara County, New York, enumerated 13 Jun 1870. Sparse information included in this census. The family names are listed with English derivatives, not German and the family is listed as "farmers". Charles is listed as "citizen". Household members.
Name Age
Charles Adrian 30 (Head, b. Mecklenburg, Farmer, Citizen)
Caroline Adrian 27 (Spouse, b. Prussia, keeping hose)
Augustus Adrian 7 (Son, b. New York, in school)
Pauline Adrian 5 (Daughter, b. New York)
Lydia Adrian 3 (Daughter, b. New York)
Charles Adrian 1 (Son, b. New York)
1880 US Federal Census for Krakow Township, Presque Isle County, Michigan, enumerated 10 Jun 1880. Charles has moved his family from Niagara County, New York, to Krakow Township, Presque Isle County, Michigan.
Apparently, the move was made sometime between the spring of 1871 and late fall or early winter 1872 as Caroline was born while family still in New York but William was born in Michigan. The family has doubled in size from four children to eight. It is interesting to note that listed as "neighbors" to Charles and family are both his brother Ernest and family as well as his parents Christopher and Caroline.
Please note spelling error of family surname in all three families as "Adren". For researchers looking for these families in the 1880 census, they will need to use this spelling to locate the families in Krakow Township.
One final special notation should be made is that daughter Caroline, born in 1870 while still in Royalton passed away at only the age of two shortly after the family arrives in Presque Isle County. Reportedly, she is laid to rest in Belknap township. Household members:

1900 United States Federal Census for Maple Ridge Township, Alpena County, Michigan, enumerated 25 Jun 1900.
At some time between 1880 and 1900 Charles once again moved his family to better farming land in Maple Ridge Township in Alpena County. Most of his family listed in the 1880 census have married and established their own homes. One, William married only four years previously has also established in homestead not far from his parents in Maple Ridge Township. Only Henry is still at home farming with his father. A son and two daughters have been born to Charles and Caroline since the 1880 census, Albert, Ida and Leone (listed as Euna). However, Albert passed away at the age of 16 years in 1898. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Alpena.
Other general information from the 1900 census: Couple married 38 years; the couple have had 12 children, but two (Caroline and Albert) have passed away. Charles immigrated in 1860 and is a naturalized citizen. However, it is not noted when Caroline immigrated nor if she has attained citizenship. Both father and son Henry are listed as "farmers". Household members:
Name Age
Charles Adrian 60 (Head, b. 09/1839, Germany, immigrated 1860, naturalized citizen, farmer.)
Caroline Adrian 55 (Spouse, b. 11/1841, Germany, mother of 12, 10 living, keeping house)
Henry Adrian 25 (Son, b. 05/1875, Michigan, farmer)
Ida Adrian 17 (Daughter, b. 11/1882, Michigan)
Leone Adrian 13 (Daughter, b. 12/1886, Michigan, at school)
1910 United States Federal Census for Alpena Ward 6 (1401 Mills Street), Alpena, Michigan, enumerated on 20 Apr 1910. Charles has retired from farming and he and Caroline have purchased a home in Alpena to spend their retirement years. With them is listed a grandson Arthur, son of William and Tilly.
Charles and Caroline have been married for 48 years. Since 1900 two additional children have passed away: August, the oldest child, passed away in 1907 at the age of 45; and Leone, the youngest child, passed away in 1908 at the age of only 21.
Additional information for Caroline verifies that she, with her family, immigrated from Germany at the age of three in 1844. Although German was her first language, she grew up bilingual speaking English without any noticeable German accent. Although in America for over 50 years, she apparently had not taken up American citizenship, at least that box in left blank in the 1910 census. However, the 1920 census would show that she had become a US citizen. Household members:
Name Age
Charles Adrian 70 (Head, b. Germany, age 70, immigrated 1856, naturalized citizen, no outside employment)
Caroline Adrian 68 (Spouse, b. Germany, age 68, mother of 12, 8 living, immigrated 1844, no outside employment)
Arthur Adrian 6 (Grandson, b. Michigan, age 6)
Charles passed away on August 10, 1917, leaving Caroline a widow. In the 1920 US Federal Census, she is living with son William and family at 433 McKinley Avenue in Alpena.
Shortly thereafter, Caroline apparently suffered a series of stokes and became partially paralyzed and passed away on February 20, 1922, at the home of her youngest daughter Ida. She received a Christian funeral from the pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church and was laid to rest next to her dear husband of 56 years in Evergreen Cemetery.
Obituary as reported in the Alpena "News", August 11, 1917
AGED RESIDENT DIES, LEAVING 34 GRANDCHILDREN AND 22 GREAT-GRAND CHILDREN.
Age: 76 Years, 10 Months, 29 Days.
After residing in Alpena for nearly 60 years, Charles Adrian, aged 77 years, died at his home, 1401 Mill St at an early hour this morning following an illness of several months duration. Death was due to infirmities brought on by old age.
Born in (Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) Germany, Mr Adrian came to Alpena county when 28 years of age. Shortly after, he went to Long Rapids Township where he resided for many years. Fifteen years ago he came to Alpena where he had resided since.
Mr Adrian was a pioneer in every since of the word. When he came here Alpena was nothing but a wilderness and by hard work he carved from the wilderness a fine farm.
Besides his widow he is survived by three sons: Charles, of Alpena; William, of Ossineke township; and Henry of Rogers City; four daughters Mrs Pauline Hinton, of Bolton; Mrs Matilda Roesehke and Mrs Louise Franklin, of Alpena; and Mrs Ida Burnash, of Long Rapids.
Mr Adrian is also survived by 34 grand children and 22 great grandchildren.
The funeral (was) held from the Immanuel Lutheran church on Monday afternoon at 2pm, Rev F W Heumann officiating. Burial services (followed) at Evergreen Cemetery.
