John Joseph Jamieson was born on Sept. 26, 1866, in the town of Thorpe, Grindon Parish, Durham Co., England. His parents were David Jamieson, employed as a "coal merchant" on the massive Wynyard Estate, and wife, Ellen Smurthwaite Jamieson. His older brothers were William Jamieson, born 1862 or 1863 and Henry Hugh Jamieson, born 1863 or 1864. Mother Ellen died late in 1868. Father David then remarried Margaret of Durham Stanton and had son David in 1869 or 1870.
