Woman Dies
Mrs. Elizabeth J. Holmes Was Widow of Former Pittston Merchant
Mrs. Elizabeth J. Holmes, 84, widow of Wheeler H. Holmes, died at 8 yesterday morning at her home, 122 Linden Street, West Pittston.
A life-long resident of the Pittstons, Mrs. Holmes was a member of one of the most prominent early Pittston families. She was born in Pittston July 18, 1859, daughter of the late Edward and Jane Daniels Morgan, whose home for many years was at 205 North Main street, Pittston, the present site of St. Michael's Greek Catholic Church.
Her parents were natives of Wales, who came to this country in the pioneer days. Her mother was a member of the prominent Daniels family of Susquehanna County, and her father became a stone contractor and real estate operator in Pittston.
She married Wheeler H. Holmes, who was a merchant for many years and who died December 18, 1924. The Holmes residence for many years was at Susquehanna and Delaware Aveneues, West Pittston. In recent years Mrs. Holmes had resided on Linden street.
Mrs. Holmes was widely known in the community and was conversant with much of the early history of the Pittstons. To the close of her long life she was keenly interested in community affairs and was most happy in receiving visits from her old-time friends. As late as Thursday she was most cheerful in an hour's conversation with her pastor, Rev. Richard J. Davey, pastor of First Methodist Church, West Pittston of which she had been a member. While a resident of Pittston, Mrs. Holmes had been a member of First Methodist Church of that city.
Surviving are these children: Mrs. Helen H. Bennett, Washington; Dr. Edward M. Holmes, Daytona Beach, Fla, and John R. Holmes of San Mateo, Cal, who was here a week ago to visit his mother.
Funeral arrangements will be made on arrival in West Pittston of members of the family.
