An American multimillionaire responsible for developing much of New York's Upper West Side.

Father, James Boulter Stokes, a merchant, financier, and philanthropist; son of Thomas and Elizabeth Ann (Boulter) Stokes, who were married in Lowestoft, England, came to America from London in 1791 in the ship owned by Mr. Stokes, and settled in New York City.

Mother, Caroline (Phelps) Stokes; daughter of Anson Greene Phelps, founder of Phelps, Dodge & Company, of the town of Ansonia, Conn , which was named for him, and of the Ansonia Brass & Copper Company and the Ansonia Clock Company, and Olivia (Eggleston) Phelps; descendant of George Phelps, who was living in Dorchester, Mass., in 1630 and moved to Windsor, Conn., in 1635.

After graduation became associated with his father in the mercantile business in New York City as a clerk with Phelps, Stokes & Company; upon the death of his father in 1896, built the Ansonia Hotel and conducted it until 1911; at the time of his death was president and a director of Marvyn Realty Company and president of Hef ChemicaL Company, Chesapeake Western Railway (a short line road owned by him, with main offices at Harnsonburg, Va.), and the KensicoKensington Cemeteries; treasurer Onward Construction Company since 1895; owner Standard Plunger Elevator Company 1902-1916; owner and president of Patchen Wilkes
Stock Farm in Lexington, Ky., which he operated until 1922; member executive committee of American Association of Trotting Horse Breeders; president and a director of American Meat Poultry Association; patron of the work of the Boys and Girls Agriculture Club in Rockingham County, Va.; had been associated with the Cuban Junta as fiscal agent in the United States; member executive committee of Cuban League of the United States of America; in 1899 appointed by Imperial Russian Government official correspondent for horse with the rank of Major, Household Regiment, by courtesy; received decorations from the Czar and also two bronze groups of horses drawing Russian wagons and sleds, valued at #30,000; member St. Nicholas Society of the City of New York, and Sons of the Revolution, author: The Right to be Well Born and The Patchen Wtlkes Stock Farm; Lieutenant, 71st Regiment, New York National Guard, in 1888.

Married (1) January 5, 1895, in New York City, Rita Hernandez de Alba, daughter of Ricardo and Marie (Hernandez de Alba) Acosta. One son, William Earl Dodge, Jr., ex-ig, who held a Lieutenant's commission in the Navy during the World War. Mr. and Mrs. Stokes were divorced in 1900.

Married (2) February 11, 1911, at Jersey City Heights, N. J., Helen, daughter of John B El wood, of Denver, Colo. Children: James and Helen Muriel. Mr. Stokes and his second wife had been separated for several years.

Death due to double pneumonia. Buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn. Survived by three children and a sister, Miss Olivia E Phelps Stokes, of Lenox, Mass., and Redlands, Calif.
