Shirley Anne Sprague Patterson, died on Wednesday, November 11, 2009.

Born to John and Trula O'Dell Sprague on July 16, 1929, she was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, TN.

She was preceded in death by her brother, John K. Sprague of Decatur, TN.

A graduate of Chattanooga Central High School, Shirley attended the University of Chattanooga where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority, after which she accepted a position as secretary at The McCallie School.

After a few months there, she would meet the man, a teacher at McCallie, who would become her husband of 54 years, Craig Houston Patterson.

In 1970, Shirley took on a role as receptionist at Girls Preparatory School, where she soon became "the voice of GPS". Still today, her familiar greetings echo in the minds
of alumnae and friends in the GPS family. In 1986, she was named an honorary alumna of the school. Shirley retired in 1992.

Devoted to her community, she served as president of the Missionary Ridge School PTA and Missionary Ridge Garden Club. She was also a volunteer for Chattanooga Community Kitchen and CASA, as well as an active member of Central Presbyterian Church and Northside Presbyterian Church.

"Ms. Pat," as she was known by the hundreds of McCallie boys she mothered, mentored and entertained during the decades she lived on the school's campus, is survived by her husband, "Mr. Pat", as well as daughters, Nancy P. McCullough, Nashville, TN; Anne (Tom) Braly, Soddy Daisy, TN. She also leaves behind grandchildren she adored, Anne Rutherford McLachlan, Chattanooga, TN; William Chandler McCullough, of Fort Collins, CO; Frances Katharine McLachlan, of Point Reyes Station, CA; Laing McCullough (Todd) Pewitt of Nashville, TN; Taylor Myers McLachlan of Atlanta, GA; sister, Charlotte (John) Berg, Chattanooga, TN; brother, James (Bonnie) Sprague, Elon, N.C.; sister-in-law, Linda Sprague, Decatur, TN; aunt, Mary Sprague Moore of Hixson, TN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Amedysis Hospice and the staff of Soddy Daisy Healthcare for their expert care during Shirley's short time there.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at noon in Chattanooga Memorial Park with the Rev. Sam Pope officiating.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
