OBITUARY-GLADSTONE
Alexander Gladstone, son of Walter and Jane Easton Gladstone, was born March 25, 1854 in Ayr, Ontario, Canada and passed away March 3, 1939 in Grant City, Mo. He moved with his parents to Missouri in 1869, locating on a farm in the Knox community north of Gentry. His father and Uncle, with other Canadian and pioneer settlers, built the Knox church in 1878. He was ordained as an elder in this Presbyterian church young in life and held this capacity until the end. In 1916 he was sent by the St Joseph Presbytery to Atlantic City, New Jersey to attend the General Assembly. He was introduced and given special recognition in this meeting for having been an elder over 35 years.

October 10, 1878, he was married to Nancy Jane Maxwell who preceded him in death July 9, 1928. To this union seven children were born. Mary Lyle of Parnell; Martha Temple, deceased; Samuel of Lone Rock, Iowa; Besa Barker; Jane Goff; Helen Warden and W A of Grant City. After the death of his wife, he made his home with his children in an around Grant City. At the time of his death he was in the home of his grandson, Ralph Gladstone. He leaves to mourn his departure, beside his immediate family, 21 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, one brother, Walter of Gentry and one sister, Mary Clark of Gothensburg, Neb, also many dear friends. Only those who knew his quiet, self-denying manner can fully appreciate the value of such a father.
