Lotte Laserstein -
born Pr-Holland Prussia -
created her greatest works
in the period between the
two world wars.

After World War II, her
works consisted of portraits
which lacked the vigor of
her early work.

Laserstein was a Jewish artist,
her early work was typical of
both the avant-garde
New Objectivity movement and
the extremely traditional
backward-looking trends in
German art of the period.

Laserstein's masterpiece was
the large (about 8' wide)
1930 painting
* 'Abend uber Potsdam'
* 'Evening Over Potsdam'
* 'The Rooftop Garde'
It shows an outstanding
Potsdam scene - a group of
friends enjoying a meal on
their terrace, with city's
skyline in the far distance.

Laserstein studied art in
both Germany and England.
Despite the bias against women
- only a handful of women were
students. She won the academy's
1925 'Gold Medal'.

After leaving the academy in
1925, Laserstein set up her
own studio in Berlin, where
she painted and taught.
During her 10 years there,
she moved away from the
tightly controlled linear
style which characterises
her earlier work, towards a
broader, more fluid approach.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She was in several exhibitions
including:
* a one-woman show at
Fritz Gurlitt's (Berlin)
* The Paris World Fair of 1937
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In 1937 she was offered an
exhibition in Stockholm, Sweden.
This led to a number of portrait
commissions. After the war came,
being a quarter Jewish, Lotte
decided to stay in Sweden.
There the artist developed a
teaching practice and became
well-known as a portrait painter.
Her early Berlin pictures, which
she had brought with her to Sweden,
were seen by few people.
It was only in her final years,
several shows presented her
artwork and a popular
following developed.

** MEMORIAL WORDS **

"It is often said that something
may survive of a person after
his death if that person was an
artist and put a little of
himself into his work. It is
perhaps in the same way that a
sort of cutting taken from one
person and grafted onto the heart
of another continues to carry on
its existence even when the
person from whom it had been
detached has perished."
