Caroline (Langel) Donlin of Le Mars died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars at the age of 101.

The former Caroline Elizabeth Kunkel was born July 13, 1908, on a farm near Oyens, the daughter of Frank and Clara (Becker) Kunkel. On Jan. 14, 1930, she married Theodore Langel, Jr. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. To this union, four children were born. They farmed northwest of Oyens for a few years until her husband died Jan. 17, 1936, at which time she moved into Le Mars.

When her children reached an age that she could work she was employed for many years with various business places in Le Mars.

On May 5, 1952 Caroline and Lester Donlin were united in marriage at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. They made their home on a farm east of Merrill for many years. Her husband Lester died March 4, 1972. Caroline moved back into Le Mars following his death.

Caroline was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the church guild, the Christian Mother's Society and various card clubs.

She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed dancing, music and playing pinochle with her friends.

Survivors include her three children: Robert Langel and his wife Laura, Arlis Luedtke and Marlene Mousel and her husband Wayne, all of Le Mars; a daughter-in-law Donna (Jonas) Langel of Le Mars; 22 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Clara Kunkel; both of her husbands; a son Larry "Butch" Langel; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Langel; a son-in-law Wally Luedtke; three grandchildren: Julie Louise Luedtke, Ann Langel and Shawn (Langel) Keizer; a great-grandson James Mousel; four brothers: Arthur, Felix, Edward and Dale Kunkel; five sisters: Matilda (Kunkel) Mayrose, Agatha (Kunkel) Thill, Dorothy (Kunkel) Kneip, Mildred (Kunkel) Nuebel and Jeri (Kunkel) Wernli; and three sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law.

A Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.

Visitation was after 3 p.m. Sunday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars, where there was a rosary by the Christian Mother's Society at 4 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m.

Pallbearers were Ted Langel, Ken Langel, Pat Langel, Jay Luedtke, Steve Mousel and Brad Mousel.

Wedding at St. Joseph's Church Unites Well Known Families

A pretty wedding was solemnized in St. Joseph's church, Le Mars, Tuesday morning, January 14, at eight o'clock when Miss Carolyn Kunkel became the bride of Theodore Langel Jr., Msgr. W. A. Pape officiating. They were attended by Dorothy Kunkel, sister of the bride, and Joe Wegmann, of Dyersville, Iowa, a cousin of the groom.

The bride was attired in a charming gown of white satin, with tulle and lace trimming and wore a veil in cap effect, caught with rhinestones and wore a beautiful string of pearls, a gift from the groom and carried a shower bouquet of bridal roses and sweet peas. The bridesmaid wore a dress of carol chiffon with tulle and silver lace trimming and wore a silver hat to match and carried a bouquet of pink carnations.

Immediately after the services the bridal party went to the home of the bride's parents, where a reception tendered them with a three course dinner which was served to about one hundred relatives. The dining room and table were decorated in the bride's chosen colors, coral and white. A large wedding cake was the center piece of the table. Six friends of the bride were table waiters. They were Misses Mary and Rosella Nuebel, Philomena Harpenau, Leona and Celeste Kemp and Mildred Middendorf.

The day was spent in social visiting and cards and closed with a shower dance at the Columbia hall, music furnished by Becker's orchestra.

Mrs. Langel is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Kunkel, a well known respectable young lady of this community. The groom is a son of Theodore Langel also a respectable young man of this community. Both bride and groom have a large number of friends who wish them a happy and successful married life.

Mr. and Mrs. Langel will be at their home after February first on a farm northwest of Oyens, owned by the groom's father.

Relatives that attended from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Kunkel of Farmer, S. D.,; Mr. and Mrs. Leo Kunkel and daughter, Roselyn and Esther, and son Cletus, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Kunkel, Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Kass and Lawrence and Greg Kunkel of Adrian, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Bowers, Miss Bowers and Joe Langel of Templeton, Ia.; Mrs. Schwartz and family and Mr. and Mrs. Ahlers of Granville, Iowa; Ludwig and Joseph Wegmann of Dyersville, Iowa.

Mrs. Caroline Langel, Le Mars, became the bride of Lester Donlin of Merrill at a high Mass at St. Joseph Catholic church Monday morning, May 5 at 7 o'clock.

Msgr. J. D. Fisch performed the single ring ceremony. The high school choir sang the mass.

The bride wore a navy blue suit with navy accessories and a corsage of pink roses. Miss Arlis Langel, the bridesmaid, was attired in a navy blue suit with blue accessories and a pink rose corsage.

Joe Donlin, the bridegroom's brother, was the best man.

Following the ceremony, a wedding dinner was served at the home of the bride. The guests included the immediate families of the bridal couple.

After a trip to Minneapolis, the couple will be at home on a farm east of Merrill.
