Harriet Gallaher was born in Illinois in 1831, one of four daughters born to George and Amanda (Williams) Gallaher. Her sisters were Elizabeth (Brown), Permelia (Fleener) and Sarah (Brown).

Their father was born in Tennessee, and moved his family to Iowa Territory in 1836. He was one of the earliest settlers in Des Moines County, Iowa and worked to clear the land and build a farm for his family. The farm of 320 acres was in Pleasant Grove township, Des Moines County, Iowa.

Harriet's mother died when the children were very young, and George remarried to Lavina Zion. To this union three more children were born, including George Gallaher Jr. and Ben Gallaher. Harriet's father died when she was only 11 years old.

Harriet married Nathan (or Norvin) Bridges, son of neighboring farmer, James Bridges. She became a mother of 9 children. At the time of the 1870 census, only 7 of the children were living.

The children included Larry, Chelsea, Marshal, Leroy, Edmond, and Isaac Bridges.

Eventually, the family moved to Nebraska, where Harriet died in 1907 at the age of 74 years.
