Alonzo Laverne "Red" Brewington, of Orangeburg, passed away Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009.

Mr. Brewington was born Dec. 8, 1921, in Orangeburg, a son of the late George W. Brewington and Connie Hart Brewington. He graduated from Orangeburg High School in 1939, where he was president of the National Honor Society. He served in the Naval Air Corps in the south Atlantic from March 1943 until October 1945.

"Red" worked at Belk-Hudson stores for 47 years, retiring in 1986 as vice president and director of 22 Belk-Hudson stores. He was past president of the Orangeburg Country Club and the South Carolina Bridge League. He was a past director of the Orangeburg Rotary Club, NationsBank, the Orangeburg Chamber of Commerce, Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College and Hillcrest Recreational Center. He was a trustee for Orangeburg Regional Hospital and St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He was a past member of the American Legion, the VFW and the BPOE Elks. He was presented with the Edisto Award for spirit of service and also received the South Carolina Technical Schools "Benefactors Make A Difference" award. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

He was an avid bridge player, having achieved "Master" status. He was a long-time member of the American Bridge Association, the Cavendish Bridge Club and the Regency Bridge Club. He loved to travel and went on more than 50 cruises and visited more than 100 countries.

"Red" was also a great dancer and taught dancing lessons to young and old. He was a long-time member of SOS as well as many shag clubs.

Mr. Brewington was predeceased by sisters Connie Brewington Odom and Grace Brewington Finkelstein; brothers, Murray Brewington and George Brewington; and niece Connie Sue Odom Gleaton.

He is survived by nieces Lynn Finkelstein, Barbara Odom, Bonnie Harter, Beverly Jones and Deborah Gleaton; nephews, George Finkelstein and Lester Finkelstein; 19 grandnieces and nephews.

A service celebrating the life of "Red" will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Nancy Freeman Stringer Chapel at The Oaks. The family will receive friends after the service.
