Longtime Palmer resident Armand Ernest Kolberg, 71, died peacefully July 20, 2003, surrounded by his family, at home after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Visitation was at Valley Funeral Home in Wasilla. A funeral was held with a viewing at St. John Lutheran Church in Palmer. A graveside service followed at Valley Memorial Park. A celebration of life was held at the home of Mike and Julie McLain.

Mr. Kolberg was born June 6, 1932, in Wrightstown, Wis., to Henry and Alma Kolberg. He attended school in Fern, Wis. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1954 at the rank of sergeant. He received numerous meritorious awards during service in the Korean War. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, VFW, Moose Lodge, and the American Legion. His loves in life included his wife, family and friends. His passions were working for the church, helping others, gardening, fishing, hunting, all aspects of the outdoors and construction. A 40-year resident of Palmer, he retired from the Carpenters' Union Local 1281 in 1990. He supervised numerous projects including J.C. Penney and the Fifth Avenue parking garages and skywalk, Hotel Captain Cook, Houston Junior/Senior High, Palmer High, and Tanaina Elementary schools, Palmer and Anchorage Pioneer's Homes, Valley Hospital, Palmer Correctional Facility, Providence hospital, and other landmarks throughout Alaska. His family wrote: "Armand will always be a part of us all, our rock and leader. He is loved and will be deeply missed."

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Rose Ann; daughter and son-in-law, Jody and Murray Fenton; sons and daughters-in-law, Harvey and Jackie Kolberg, Armand M. and Julie Kolberg, and David and Wendy Kolberg; grandchildren, Allison, Kyle, Kelsey, Michael, Kalen, Jamie, Sandra, Zachary, Megan and Konnor; brothers, Wayne Kolberg and John Voss; sisters and brothers-in-law, Romaine and Russell Seefeldt, Marge and Jim LeMay, Helen Baken, Sharon and Richard Julian, Lois and Andrew Hanson, and Karen and Robert Palzewicz; and many other relatives. Mr. Kolberg was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Henry Jr. and Harvey; sisters, Colleen, Donna, Glenda, Sandra and Patricia; brother-in-law, Gene Baken; and sister-in-law, Dolly Kolberg. Valley Funeral Home and St. John Lutheran Church are in charge of arrangements.
