Charles Sr. immigrated to Maine from France in 1835 and worked as a saloon keeper. He married Margaret Avery Dec.17,1836 but she died shortly after their marriage. Charles then married Martha Foster Dec. 10, 1839 in Bangor,Penobscot Co.,Maine by the Rev. S.L. Pomroy.
In 1858 Charles & his family board "The Golden Rocket" for its maiden voyage around the Horn. Of a dozen children, only 3 survived to make this journey: Charles W., Josephine and John W.Hellenbrand. In 1859 the family arrives in Oregon and settles for two years on a farm next to Martha's brother, Philip Foster, in Eagle Creek. In 1870, Charles is again listed as a saloon keeper.
