Helen Johnston Luippold, 68, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, April 9, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge following the rapid onset of acute leukemia.

Mrs. Luippold came to Oak Ridge in 1952 to work for Union Carbide Nuclear Division as a researcher in cytogenetics in the Biology Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She retired in the early 1970s.

She was born in Kissimmee, Fla., on March 11, 1929, the daughter of Herbert M. and Amelia Byrd Johnston. She held both a bachelor of arts and a master of science degree from Florida State University.

Before a stroke several years ago limited her activities, Mrs. Luippold enjoyed hiking in the Smoky Mountains and gardening. She was a member of the former West Village Garden Club.

Mrs. Luippold is survived by her husband, Henry Edward Luippold; two sons, Peter Luippold of Oak Ridge and Kenneth Luippold and his wife, Sharon, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; one granddaughter, Erin Luippold of Fort Lauderdale; and three brothers, Cecil Johnston of Ocala, Fla., H. Blake Johnston of Kissimmee and James L. Johnston of Arizona.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park, with the Rev. Michael Prince officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Weatherford Mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the American Cancer Society, Anderson County Unit, in care of Lee Costanzo, 103 Case Lane, Oak Ridge, Tenn. 37830.
