Martha "Mattie" Branson -- not to be confused with her aunt of the same name -- was a daughter of Reuben Branson and Eliza Louisa Armstrong Crawford Snediker Branson Eagle. She passed away of diphtheria. The birth year on her grave is wrong; she was reburied in 1935, and the current headstone was put in place then with the wrong year, 1883 instead of 1882. She was buried beside her brother William Henry Branson. Subsequently her sister Mamie (Dougherty), her mother Louisa, and her stepfather Joseph Eagle (a stepfather she never knew, because of her early death) were buried in adjacent graves.
Mattie was a granddaughter of Mariposa County pioneers John Sevier Branson and Martha Jane Ousley. She was a twin of Mabel Grace Branson.
