He first enlisted from Cambridge on 8 Sep 1862 and mustered into the 13th Vermont. He mustered out on 21 Jul 1863 at Brattleboro. He then re-enlisted on 17 Dec 1863 and mustered into the 1st VT Cavalry. He was transferred from Company M to Company F on 21 Jun 1865. He mustered out on 9 Aug 1865 at Burlington, VT.

“He was engaged in the battle of Gettysburg, on the second and third days of fighting; the battle of the Wilderness; the siege of Petersburg; and all the battles that the 1st Vermont Calvary was engaged in from Winchester to the close of war. His closest comrades in the service were William E. Woods, Birney S. Fullington, George Brush, Charley Carleton and Thad Whipple. He went west about fifteen years ago (1880) and died there soon after.” [Vermont Enrolled Militia 1861-1867, Page 44].
