Professional Football Player. For five seasons (1965 to 1969) he played at the defensive back (left-cornerback) position in the National Football League with the Minnesota Vikings. He was a member of the Vikings' team that reached Super Bowl IV in 1970 and part of a solid secondary that included such star players as Bobby Bryant, Karl Kassulke, Paul Krause and Ed Sharockman. Born James Earsell Mackbee, he was raised in California where he attended Vallejo High School. He was a two-sport athlete at Solano Community College (originally Vallejo Junior College), excelling at basketball and football before concluding his collegiate career at Utah State University. Mackbee was signed by Minnesota as a non-drafted player and appeared in 66 career regular season games, recording 15 interceptions for 280 yards with 1 touchdown. Following his football career, he became a successful businessman and devoted his time to mentoring troubled youths. He was inducted into the Solano Community College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. He died of complications from a stroke he suffered in 2005.
