Sad and Fatal Drowning Accident.
On last Friday afternoon a sad and fatal accident occurred in the Conodoguinet Creek, about one-half mile east of Bergner's mill, by which two young men lost their lives. Jacob Nickey, aged about 23 years employed by Elmer Bear on the John Kutz farm, a few miles West of Carlisle, and Hezekiah Barston Yoter, aged 13 years, the son of widow Yoter, of Plainfield, went swimming in the Conodoguinet Creek below Bergner's mill. A short distance below where they went in J C Keiser and J W Kerns were engaged in fishing. They saw the young men swim around, come out on the bank, and again enter the water. Shortly after Mr Keiser noticed them bobbing up and down, but thinking they were playing, paid no attention to them. Then he heard them shouting, and becamed alarmed, he and Mr Kerns hastened to the spot, but before they got there the bodies had disappeared. The place where they were drowned is near a whirlpool, very dangerous, well-known, and the spot where several lives had been lost in the same manner. The alarm was immediately given, and soon a large crowd of people were on the spot. The body of Nickey was recovered about one-half hour afterwards, and Yoter's about three hours later. Coroner Shalley was notified, and at once proceeded to the spot to hold an inquest. A jury was empaneled, consisting of S L Eppley, David E Strohm, H J Minnich, J M Lindenberger, R C Ogle and S A Bowers, and after listening to the evidence of Messrs. Keiser and Kerns, returned a verdict that "Jacob Nickey and Hezekiah Yoter came to their deaths by accidentally drowning in the Conodoguinet Creek near Bergner's mill, while bathing."
The news spread rapidly, and created great excitement in the neighborhood. Both were deserving young men, Nickey being a brother of Washington Nickey, of this place, and Yoter the only son of his mother, a widow, residing in Plainfield. The funeral of Mr Nickey took place on Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the residence of Andrew Ensminger, a short distance below Newville, and young Yoter's funeral took place on Sunday morning at 10 o'clock from his mothers residence in Plainfield, the interment of both being in the Bethel Cemetery, at Plainfield. Both funerals were largely attended.
