Engineer, Artist. Henri Rouart designed the pneumatic tube system of the Paris Post Office. He served as an Artillery Captain during the War of 1870, and after becoming a painter in his fifties, participated in the First Exhibition of the Impressionists in 1874, and helped financially back two more major Impressionist exhibitions. A subject of several Edgar Degas paintings, Rouart was also mayor of the town of La Queue-en-Brie in the department of Val-de-Marne from 1891 to 1912. The sale of his art collection, after his 1912 death, led to the first boom in popularity and cost of Impressionist works.
