French Napoleonic Wars General. Born into an old Alsatian family, he joined an infantry regiment at the age of 14. In 1807 he became the commanding officer of the 1st Cuirassier Regiment and in 1809 he led his cavalrymen at the Battles of Eckmuhl, Ratisbon, Aspern-Essling, and Wagram. Promoted to general of brigade, he served at the Battles of the First and Second Polotsk and Berezina in 1812. He led a cavalry brigade at the Battles of Lutzen and Bautzen in 1813. Promoted to general of division, he led a cavalry division at the Battles of Dresden, Leipzig, and Hanau also in 1813. He commanded a cavalry division at the Battle of Arcis-sur-Aube in 1814. He then became an inspector general and a member of the Chamber of Deputies in 1815 and 1816. In 1810 he was made Baron of the Empire and was a recipient of the Légion d'Honneur (CC) in 1813 and Chevalier of the Order of St. Louis in 1814. He died at the age of 44. His surname is one of the names inscribed under the Arc de Triomphe, on Column 12.
