William was the son of William Henry Burris and Mary Elisabeth Layton Burris of Rt. 4, Concord, North Carolina. He entered the service on 27 June 1941 and was in the 4th Division, Infantry. He died of wounds in France on 9 June 1944 after having served overseas for six months. He was awarded the EAMET Medal, the American Defense Medal, and the Purple Heart.

Information obtained from the book "A History of Cabarrus County in the Wars," 1947 and from FindAGrave contributor, B24CoPilotNiece.

The following information was obtained from William's brother, which was conveyed to me through Robert C Peurifoy.

He said that his brother took part in the D-Day landing on Normandy. The government never gave them details of his death except that it was during combat.
