He was the eldest son of John Capps (1809-1843) and Sarah Taliaferro Gilmer. He married Anna Hartsook on 31 December 1867 in Greene County, Illinois.

Co E, 122nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Civil War.

US Army Service, Civil War

First Sergeant, Co. E, 122 IL Reg Infantry Volunteers; at the close of the war, he held the rank of 1st Lieut and Brevt Capt.

He entered the service as First Sergeant at Carlinville, IL on Aug 15, 1862. He belonged to Co. E, 122 IL Reg Infantry Volunteers. On April 4, 1863, he was promoted to 2nd Lieut. On July 14, 1864, he was promoted to 1st Lieut. On Mar 26, 1865, he was promoted to Brievt Capt. At the close of the war, he held the rank of 1st Lieut and Brievt Capt. He was first, discharged, April 4, 1863, at Saulsbury, TN, for promotion to 2nd Lieut.
