Alfred E. Pace

Mr. Pace was born in the state of Kentucky, June 28, 1911. He moved from Kentucky from Kentucky to Arkansas, and from Arkansas came to Texas in the spring of 1855. He was an intimate personal friend of Gen. Albert Pike, the most distinguished Mason in the United States, perhaps. Bro. Pace was recorder at Little Rock, Ark., for a number of terms before coming to Texas. He was married on May 26, 1850, and resided in Bonham a greater portion of his time from his marriage until his death. He engaged in the mercantile business in Bonham for a number of years, and acquired a great deal of valuable property by his industry and honorable business methods. It is said by one who knew him intimately that "he was the personification of honor." He was noted on account of his high sense of honor and his business integrity. In the latter years of his life he engaged in farming. He was initiated in this Lodge on July 28, 1855, nearly forty-two years ago; passed August 26, 1855, and was raised to the sublime degree of a master Mason on October 11, 1855. He was a devoted Mason, and took great interest in promoting it, as well as all public enterprises which were calculated to refine and elevate the community in which he lived, especially all enterprises of an educational character. He died on January 20, 1868, and was held in such high esteem that a request, which was complied with, was made that the schools and all the merchants close their doors on the evening of January 22, 1868, until after the funeral services. He was buried on the evening of the last date, with the usual Masonic honors.
