Maitland A. Claycomb was born in Lawrence Co., IL in 1863 to Abraham and Nancy (Turbett) Claycomb. He moved to Knox Co., IN in 1869 to live with his grandparents after the death of his mother. He went to school and worked on the farm until the age of 22 when he engaged in a mercantile business at Giro, Gibson Co., IN, where he secured and named the post office there. He was only there six months then removed to Monroe City in May 1887 where he continued in business until September 1900. He then sold his store and moved to Vincennes where he became a representative of Aetna Life Insurance Co. In 1896, Maitland was elected to the state legislature to represent Knox County and was re-elected in 1898. He was married in 1899 to Barbara Marchino.
