Son of Alma John and Ellen Jardine Hoggan.

World War II veteran. Private First Class, entered the Army on June 29, 1943, and was assigned for combat training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

During his furlough, he married Beatrice "Elaine" Merrill, of Annis. Two months later, he was sent overseas and was assigned to a combat Engineer Battalion of the Division that relieved the Marines on Guadalcanal. He served with the 43rd Infantry Division during all of its participation, which included action in the Solomon Islands, including Munda. He also served in Hawaii, Caledonia, New Hebrides, and New Zealand. He came home aboard the "Sea Witch" on Nov. 22, 1945.
