Lovey was born in north Texas in the small town of Aubrey on a horse ranch where her father worked. Her parents are Elbert Simon Kirby and Laura Bea Fullerton Kirby. She grew up in Mill Creek, a small community south of Supher, Oklahoma.
After her father's death, she and her mother moved to southern California where that summer she me Henry Othel Bragg. Shortly after they met at a dance in Long Beach they eloped and were married October 14, 1939 in Yuma, AZ. They used a borrowed car and money! That winter he took her into the mountains where they trapped and hunted and I suppose really got to know each other! I was told during this time he taught her how to cook!
They returned to civilization and set up housekeeping in Dairy Valley near Norwalk, Calif. She worked at Vultee Aircraft in Downey, Calif during the first year of WWI. Her first child Alice Kay was born Sept. 14, 1942.
She is the mother of three children: Alice Kay Bragg Lester, Elbert Henry Bragg and Henrietta "Henri" Bragg Isaacs.
She worked with her husband in their roofing company H. O. Bragg Roofing Co. She did everything from load trucks to purchasing material. I don't recall her ever doing any 'office' work or doing any estimating, but she could run a crew and drive a truck!
She had many of her own business enterprises: real estate, a military salvage store, home dinners displaying the Seal O Matic pots and pans and a pawn shop with Papa! She loved people and was always gathering up clothes and other necessities and would trailer them to the Navajo or down into Mexico to the poorer villages. Mother made friends where ever she went. No one was a stranger to her.
She and Papa invited Jesus to be Lord of their lives in the little Foursquare Church across the street from their house in Norwalk, CA. From then on she shared the Gospel with everyone she met. At one time she ran a mission in South Whittier for the Mexican community where she worked with broken families, the homeless, rebellious teens and gang members.
She loved to fish and spent many leisure hours along a river or on the ocean. She took her children everywhere with her, even when making a roofing material delivery! She tucked me on her left side (yes, between the door and herself) and put Alice and Elbert on her right. This way she controlled the always present warfare that we initiated as children...She made sure we all went to church camp each summer, as well as many of our childhood friends. She worked with the older kids during Vacation Bible School building bird houses and things like that. She packed us kids in the car and drove us to the mountains to play in the snow, to the beach to play in the ocean and to all the local amusement parks springing up at the time.
She was the most wonderful mother...I could tell her anything and usually told her everything. She was my great confidant...
