Laura Franklin Delano. Daughter of Warren Delano, President of the Delano Coal Company, one of the largest operations in Pennsylvania, and Jennie Walters Delano, and cousin of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Known for her commanding and vibrant personality; she was at once unusually kind, and boldly outspoken. A well known breeder of Irish Setters and Dachschunds, she was for many years a judge at leading dog shows in the United States and abroad. An accomplished carriage driver, she won numerous awards at the annual Dutchess County Fair driving her father's horses, raised on his vast 'Steen Valetje' estate in nearby Barrytown-on-Hudson, and those of her friend, and Hudson Valley neighbor, Helen ( Mrs. Vincent ) Astor. Laura Delano was also an active member of the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland, founded by her maternal uncle, Henry Walters, railroad magnate and consummate collector. Naturally flamboyant, as a child she disdained any other drink but Apollinairis Water, a naturally carbonated imported mineral water, and acquired the nickname of "Polly". Described in the family as a 'law unto herself'; her peculiar style of clothes, overabundant display of jewelry, purple-dyed hair, and sharply accented "widow's peak", that she carefully applied to her forehead each morning, became her trademark. A favorite cousin of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, she traveled extensively with him on tours of inspection during the war years, accompanied by her, and F.D.R.'s, fellow-cousin Margaret 'Daisy' Suckley, and Fala, the President's Scottish terrier. They were in his company when he was fatally struck at the 'Little White House' at Warm Springs, Georgia. It was to Laura Delano that he spoke his last known coherent words, "Be careful!", as she assisted in carrying the President to his bedroom, just prior to his death.
