Sen. Barrett was born March 1, 1922, in Decatur, Ill., to Ferre Charles and Sylvia M. (Myers) Barrett. He was married to Margaret Wise on Sept. 28, 1946. She survives.

He was a former Indiana state senator from 1958 to 1962. He served as chairman of the Welfare and Social Security Committee and was on the study committee for the Not For Profit Trade Schools and Employment Security acts.

He organized the Whitley County Young Democrats in 1957, and served as the organization's first president. The next year, he was elected to the Fourth District presidency. During his time in that office, Young Democrats clubs were organized in every county of the district.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II. While in the service, he took part in five major invasions and was on the USS Breton for 30 months in the South Pacific.

He was an inventory auditor at International Harvester, where he worked for 35 years, retiring in 1982. At Harvester, he served on the Central Labor Council. He was also the chairman of CAP, Local 305.

He was a member of Angola American Legion Post No. 31, and was a past commander of Churubusco American Legion Post No. 157. He was past chaplain of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7205, and was the former Democratic city chairman in Churubusco, where he was precinct committeeman for 45 years.

He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Angola, as well as the Knights of Columbus, Allen County Labor Club, the Jefferson Club and the Indiana Legislative Club.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church in Ege, with the Rev. Fred Pasche officiating. Calling will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Weicht Funeral Home, Angola.

Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Ege. Military graveside rites will be performed.
