SALT LAKE CITY--Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, VerNon Blackham, passed away Friday, January 15, 1999, of natural causes.

He was born January 31, 1926, in Moroni, Sanpete County, Utah, the son of Willard James and Sarah Jane Draper Blackham.

A veteran of World War II, he served in Europe, mostly as First Sgt. of the 250th Station Hospital in Regensburg Germany. At the completion of his military service, he fulfilled an LDS mission to the California Mission, serving mostly in Southern California. He attended Snow College, and graduated from Brigham Young University. On September 1, 1950 he married Lorene Burton in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they are the parents of six children, 27 grandchildren and one expected great-grandchild.

His devotions were to his faith, his family, his country and his career as an educator. He taught Mathematics at Olympus Junior High School briefly, but mostly at Olympus High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. Shortly after his retirement he was accompanied by his wife and youngest daughter on a Education mission, teaching at Moroni High School on the Island of Tarawa in the Republic of Kiribati (Gilbert Islands). After a short period of service they were transferred to the campus of BYU-Hawaii where they served for 4 1/2 years. While there he taught in both the Mathematics and Religion departments. During his life he served in many callings in the LDS Church. In 1995 he and his wife were called as Ordinance Workers in the Salt Lake Temple. He was so grateful for this call. Because of failing health he was recently released.

He is survived by his wife, Lorene Blackham and their six children, Nanette and Keith Bame, Las Vegas, Nevada; David and Lori Blackham, Santa Rosa, California; Melissa and Ron Hilton, Cupertino, California; Paul and Doris Blackham, Sandy, Utah; Miriam and Kim Een, Las Vegas, Nevada; and Lara and Mark Van Gundy, Sierra Vista, Arizona.
