In his book on the Burch family, W. Bernette Burch cites one wife for Joseph Burch -- Mary Hollendsworth. He lists three children -- Joseph, Jr., Edward S (Ned) and John. A different source cites one wife -- Mary Ann Fisher -- and one child -- Joseph, Jr. The possibility exists that
Mary Hollendsworth and Mary Ann Fisher were the same person and she was married prior to marrying Joseph Burch. Thus, one name was her maiden name and one was her married name. This theory has not been proven. There is also disagreement as to the correctness of the name Fisher. Some researches think it was Fithner.
The 1778 and 1780 SC censuses list Joseph Burch as living in the Georgetown District, no township given.
Joseph Burch, Sr, is recognized by the DAR as a Patriot during the Revolutionary War. "Joseph Burch, Sr, who resided in the Georgetown District, SC, during the American Revolution, assisted in establishing American Independence while acting in the capacity of Patriot. His servces during the Revolutionary War were as follows: Gave supplies to Continental Troops during 1780, 1781, 1782 and 1783; board supplied to Col Lee March 1781. Joseph Burch, Sr received payment for supplies."
