Frank D. Lucas, 56, 1226 Roberts, was free on $5,000 bond today after arraignment on a charge of murder late Thursday.

Lucas was charged in connection with the death of George Wilford Laman, 49, 400 E. Sixth St., who died in North Plains Hospital Thursday morning of wounds sustained when a shotgun was discharged at Lucas' residence shortly after midnight Wednesday.

A second man, originally held by police during investigation of the death of Laman, 54-year-old John Stewart Wade, 802 Gorman, Stinnett, was freed from original charges and was released after making $25 bond on a misdemeanor charge filed in corporation court.

The charge against Lucas was filed following an 18-hour investigation by Borger police who reported they were called to the Lucas home about 1:35 a.m. Thursday where they found Laman seriously wounded from a shotgun blast.

Lucas and Wade were both at the house when officers arrived, official reports said.

The wounding and subsequent death, according to police, climaxed an evening-long session between the three men which apparently included heavy drinking, officers reported.

Funeral services for George Wilford Laman are scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday from Minton Memorial Chapel, the Rev. Weldon Butler, pastor of First Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will follow in Highland Park Cemetery, under the direction of Minton's.

Casketbearers are Don Beavers, Lee Briggs, Floyd Wright, Clarence Beavers, James Cox and Clinton Stribling.

Laman was a veteran of WWII and had lived in Borger for 20 years.
