Jazz Musician. The daughter of jazz legend Jimmy Rowles (deceased 1996), she carved out her own significant career as a singer, trumpeter, and fluegelhorn player. Born into the music world (and named for Benny Goodman's piano player Jess Stacy), she started playing from an early age. Taking-up the trumpet after piano and drums did not seem a good "fit", Stacy began performing professionally at the Monterey Jazz Festival while still a teenager. She produced her first headline album, "Tell it Like It Is" in 1984; it became apparent that her music style and that of her father worked well together, leading to her participation on several of his albums. Stacy and Jimmy were joint-lead for "Looking Back" (1992) and the 1993 "Me and the Moon". A regular on the West Coast jazz scene, Stacy toured extensively in Canada and Europe; begining in 1993, she joined the all-girl Canadian group Velvet Glove, performing several times at the Ottawa Jazz Festival. In Europe, she was part of Witchcraft, while in America she played and recorded with Maiden Voyage, the Jazz Birds, and the Jazz Tap Ensemble. In her spare time, Stacy made and marketed her own line of jewelry; she was married once, briefly, in 1987. She died at home two weeks after a car wreck. Of her approach to music, Stacy said: "I am spongy, and I take apart what I hear, and I change it, and that process keeps everything fresh and moving".
