British Naval Service

He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Sgt Houltram died following an explosion while on foot patrol near Gereshk in Helmand Province. A spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson, said, "This Marine gave his life for his country and the freedom of the Afghan people; there is no greater sacrifice than this."

He was one of a group of commandos assigned to destroy a Taliban bomb-making factory. As is customary in cases of special forces operations, officials refused to comment on the details of the incident. According to several reports, Sgt Houltram led the attack by fast roping into the enemy compound from a helicopter. As a firefight broke out, several mortar shells were detonated killing Sgt Houltram and wounding three other commandos.

Aged 33, from Cowie, Stirlingshire, Scotland. He had been in the SBS more than a decade. For a previous Afghan tour, then Corporal Houltram received the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service (QCVS) in the Operational Honours List of July 2008.

Sgt Houltram left behind his parents, brother and fiancée.

A colleague said, "Andy was a legend in the unit. A jock with a lot of charm, but also hard as nails. All the young lads used to look up to him as someone they could aim to be like with a lot of hard work. His death is a massive loss, and has hit us all hard."

Funeral was held September 16, 2009 in Dunblane Cathedral amid tight security to protect the identities of special forces personnel. The service was attended by some 600 mourners.
