John enlisted twice in the Union Army- first in Co. F , 15th VT Inf., and second, Co. K, 3rd VT Infantry. Total time was 21 months, 7 days. He came home, married Mary H. Kennedy, and farmed. In 1870, he heads a household that has his wife, and first two children, his elderly father, his widowed sister Sarah and her son, and the widower and 2 children of his sister Jane. Only his sister Lydia was living elsewhere with her own family. In December 1879 he started collecting an invalid pension based on his Civil war service. Both his sister Sarah and his father, Reuben, die in 1882. John dies 1886 when his four sons Charles, George, Chester and Luther were 19, 17, 13, and 10.
