He was the paternal grandchild of Superior Court Judge William Horn Battle & Lucy Martin Plummer of Raleigh; and gr-grandchild of Col. Joel Battle & Mary Palmer Johnston of Edgecombe County. He is a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, J. John Battle (1634-1691) who immigrated from England to the Virginia Colonies in 1654 with his family and a number of relatives and neighbors settling on the west Fork of the Nansemond River in a district since known as Nansemond County, Virginia. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandchild of Superior Court Judge Thomas Samuel Ashe & Caroline Burgwyn, of Anson County, and descended from prominent families on all sides of her family tree.
Samuel Ashe Battled died in Raleigh in 1865, about 2 months shy of his 2nd birthday.
