He was born May 21, 1905 in Charleston, Utah to Hyrum S. and Sarah Van Wagoner Winterton. He married Nida Willoughby June 29, 1931 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, she died June 3,
1984. He married Vida Henrie Zager April 17, 1993. Van was a longtime cattleman and received many honors and awards for his ranching and cattle operations. Served in the state legislature 1956-58, active in church and community projects.
He is survived by his wife, Vida, of Roosevelt, sons and daughters, Eldon (Jean) Winterton, Kearns; Keith (Vivian) Winterton, Don (Bobbi) Winterton, and Diane (Bill) Cook, all of Roosevelt; Step-son, Clyd (Rae) Zager, Ryderwood, WA, step daughter-in-law, Nadine Zager, Neola; 26 grandchildren, 67 great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren; 21 step grandchildren, five step great grandchildren, seven step-great great grandchildren; Brother and sisters, Omni (Carma) Winterton, Roosevelt; Ruth (Vern) Huff, Woodland; Eva Kohkonen, Logan, Stella Lewis, Salt Lake City, sister-in-law, Beatrice Winterton, Centerville. He was preceded in death by brothers Harold, Ralph and Clair and sisters, Grace Simmons and Louella Walker; and one great great grandchild, a step son, Loyd Zager.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 7th, 11 a.m., at the Roosevelt LDS West Stake Center, 10 South Skyline Drive (700 West). Friends may call at the Hullinger Olpin Mortuary, 457 E. 300 N., Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday at the church from 10-10:45 a.m. Burial in the Charleston Cemetery, 4 p.m.
