Daniel Dana graduated from Dartmouth in 1788. After graduation, he was appointed Preceptor of Moor's School in connection with Dartmouth. Then he went on to teach at Exeter Academy, where he was a popular teacher. He left to study theology at Ipswich and was licensed as a minister in 1793. In 1794 he accepted the invitation of a church in Newburyport (later known as the Presbyterian Church), where he served until 1820. He remained a citizen of Newburyport for the remainder of his life, with the exception of a five-year interval spent in New Hampshire.
A reluctant fourth president of Dartmouth College, Dr. Dana served one year (1820-1821) before resigning due to health concerns. He returned to ministry at the Second Presbyterian Church in Newburyport in 1826, and he resigned his pastoral charge in 1845 at age 74, whereupon he was given the title Minister at Large in Newburyport.
His gravestone says he was born 24 July 1771, but Ipswich Vital Records say he was born 25 July 1771.
