A reluctant fourth president of Dartmouth College, Dr. Dana served one year (1820-1821) before resigning due to health concerns. He returned to ministry at the Second Presbyterian Church in Newburyport in 1826, and he resigned his pastoral charge in 1845 at age 74, whereupon he was given the title Minister at Large in Newburyport.
His gravestone says he was born 24 July 1771, but Ipswich Vital Records say he was born 25 July 1771.
Dr. Dana had 8 children by his first wife and 4 by his second. Missing for now from Find A Grave are:
Joseph Dana, 1803-1834, died Maryland or Ohio
Susanna Dana, 1807-1807, died Newburyport
Lydia Coombs (Dana) Tucker, 1817-1902, died Newburyport
Sarah (Dana) Wheelwright, 1819-1856, died Newburyport
Samuel Dana, 1819-1837, died at sea

Inscription
The Reverend DANIEL DANA D.D. of blessed memory.
Sixty six years a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, of which sixty were in Newburyport.
Born July 24, 1771.
Died Aug. 26, 1859.
How good, how kind, how upright and honorable, how firm in loyalty to truth, how guileless, how saintly, let those say, from whose hearts the dear, remembrance of the Christian Pastor, the sympathizing friend, the affectionate father, can never fade away.
After he had served his own generation by the will of God he fell asleep - Acts XIII. 36.
A man greatly beloved - Dan. X.11.
