In 1850 Beat 5 Division 16, Fayette, AL we find James W Smith 35, Marcy Smith 40 (Mary), Benjamin F Smith 10, William W Smith 6, & Mary M Smith 3.

Born in Alabama about 1844. Enlisted October 3, 1861. Wounded by gunshot in right leg at South Mountain on September 14, 1862 and admitted to #12 Hospital on October 4. Present on rolls at Andersonville as part of Invalid Corps (more than likely detached elsewhere) and paroled on May 27, 1865 in Columbus, Mississippi. Younger brother by 4 years of Pvt. Benjamin Smith who was killed at Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863. Applied for pension in Lamar County in 1902 and died there on June 4, 1912. His widow Sarah Jane applied for pension in 1920.
