Rev. D. Edward Sullivan, of York, a retired priest of the Catholic Diocese of Charlotte, NC, departed this life for Heavenly slumber November 5, 2009.

He was born August 15, 1915, a son of the late Daniel E. and Margaret Lutz Sullivan.

Father Sullivan was a 1929 graduate of St. Mary's School, York and a 1932 graduate of St. Francis Prep, Loretta, PA. He attended the University of Detroit and graduated from St. Francis College, Loretta, in 1938. He later graduated from St. Francis Seminary in 1942.

He was ordained to the priesthood on May 14, 1942, in Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Altoona, by the Most Reverend Richard T. Guilfoyle for the Diocese of Raleigh, N.C.

His first appointment was to the U.S. Navy Pre-flight School at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he served as the Catholic Chaplain from 1942 to 1945.

Father Sullivan served as assistant pastor of St. James' Church, Hamlet, NC, and St. Mary's Church, Laurinberg, NC, from 1945 to 1946. In May 1946, he was appointed Administrator of St. Mary's Church, Wilmington, NC. In September 1946, he was appointed founding pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Lexington, NC, and St. Joseph's Church in Asheboro.

In 1951 Fr. Sullivan was appointed pastor of Holy Trinity Parish in Kinston, NC. He remained there for a period of 12 years when he was appointed pastor of St. Patrick's Parish in Charlotte in 1962. In 1966, he became pastor of St. Ann's parish in the same city, where he served for a period of four years.

Since 1971, he has been living in Winchester, VA, and more recently in York. From August 1996 till September 2002 he was chaplain at Misericordia Nursing Home.

Fr. Sullivan is survived by nieces and nephews.
