A graduate of Hamilton College, came to Michigan under the auspices of his uncle, famed Michigan Indian agent Henry Schoolcraft. He was admitted to the bar in Marshall, served as Washington correspondent for the Detroit Free Press. Justice of the Calhoun County Court, Shearman was Marshall's third state superintendent of public instruction (1849-54) and publisher of the Michigan Journal of Education.
