Burial was in Chapel Hill Memorial Garden, Arapahoe Co., CO.
Lula Etta Shelton was the d/o James Marlon Shelton (b 27 Jan 1857, d 4 Nov 1885) and Jane Hannah Carroll (b 16 Dec 1847, d 1923 or 1924.)
Samuel A. Barber (of Thomas S.) reminisced in 1973: "Cousin George Murphy married Lu Shelton, sister of the Charlie Shelton who later moved to Hancock Co., Iowa, and dug tile ditches with me. George & Lu were living on a Hancock Co. farm owned by Henry Herrin in 1898. (Herrin had married Martha Judy Barber, sister of MaryD Ann and Thomas0.) When the T.S. Barber family moved to this Hancock Co. farm in 1898, having traded higher priced Illinois farm land for this Iowa land, George moved back to Illinois where he farmed with his brother, James." He may have remained in Iowa for some time or returned, as a small news item in the paper at the time of Robert Murphy's death in Aug 1900 stated that George had returned from Iowa to visit the family.
In 1913 George and Lula Murphy moved from Knox City, MO, to a farm outside of Coffeyville, KS. They moved into Coffeyville during WWI and resided at 408 W. 12th St. for many years. Beulah Fouch recalls, "In the early days the George Murphys lived on a farm not far from town and were always included in the Samuel S. Barber family reunions," (S. S. Barber was another brother of Mary Ann Barber Murphy.)
In 1948 George retired as District Mgr. of Capper Publications. He began working for them in 1914 and used up eleven automobiles covering his territory for Capper during his 34 years with them. After retiring, George and Lula moved to Englewood, CO, to live with their daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Roy Taylor. They remained there until they died in 1955 and 1963.
George and Lula were devout Christians and belonged to the Church of the Nazarene most of their married life. Both had a fine sense of humor. Lula
made her last long trip in 1962 when she flew to California to visit her sons,
Loren and Harlan.
