Amanda was born on the 11th of March 1798 in the newly established town of Pompey, in Onondaga County, New York. She was the 6th of 11 children born to Reuben Davis and Mary “Polly” Abbott, who were both from Massachusetts. In 1818, she wed George Washington Braffett, a veteran of the War of 1812 and a Cooper by trade. The couple had 9 children in New York before migrating west and settling in Nauvoo, Illinois with other followers of the Mormon faith. The family experienced many hardships on their journey, including harassment and discrimination. They were driven out of many places along the way until they reached Nauvoo. There they were allowed to stay unmolested for a time, however because of the poor living conditions in Nauvoo, many people died due to diseases related to unclean drinking water. Amanda’s 2 youngest children: Lucinda and Henry both died in 1844 within a month of each other. Amanda’s death followed soon after. She died on the 17th of October 1844 and is buried with her two youngest children in Nauvoo. Her widowed husband, along with Almira Braffett and the rest of their children, soon left Nauvoo and headed west toward Utah.
