Howard L. Jones, 96, of Madison, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover.

He was born May 4, 1913, in Hanover, the son of Jesse and Effie King Jones. He was raised in Jefferson County and was a 1931 graduate of Saluda High School. He attended trade school during the Depression to learn to be a meat cutter. He was employed as a meat cutter with the Kroger Co. for more than 42 years. He enjoyed farming on Ryker's Ridge and growing an orchard and large garden. He was a member of First Baptist Church and also had been a member of the Hanover Masonic Lodge No. 652 F. & A.M. and a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 227.

He is survived by one daughter, Rosalie Evans of Madison; two sisters, Verna Finke of Madison and Eula Wheeler of Hanover; one brother, Clarence Jones of Madison; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, ClaraBel Smoot Jones, whom he married April 7, 1935, and who died March 3, 2007; his parents; one sister, Glenna Jones Taylor; and three brothers, Burdsal, Wilbur and Ernest Jones.

The funeral was at Wirt Baptist Church. Burial was in Moffett Cemetery in Milton, Ky.
